Cinema Nova Starts Supernova Coop

By the 31st of March 2024, Supernova Coop, a cooperative associated with Cinéma Nova, aims to acquire the long-term lease of the cinema building located at number 3 rue d’Arenberg in Brussels. Every cinephile, whether they are loyal or occasional attendees, friends of friends of Nova, non-profit organizations, private companies, public institutions, and more, can become shareholders. Supernova Coop has received approval as a social economy enterprise and has been awarded the Solidarity Finance label, guaranteeing that the investment made by purchasing shares places people (and the environment) at the center of the project. For more information on this project, please visit the Supernova Coop website.

It is customary to visit a property before buying it. Therefore, on Sunday, December 17th, Cinéma Nova is organizing two tours of the cinema at number 3 rue d’Arenberg. Cinéma Nova is an alternative and self-managed cinema that first opened its doors in 1997. However, the history of the Nova room dates all the way back to 1899 when it was reconstructed in the eclectic, neoclassical style it still displays today. Over the years, several businesses have occupied the building, from a hat and silk shop to a wine merchant, multiple theaters, two cinemas, and finally, Cinéma Nova, which remains in operation today.

Cinéma Nova’s programming is dedicated to films and videos from independent productions projected in their original format on film. The idea is to offer an engaged form of cinema, featuring films that address global and societal issues and explore what can be done to make the world a better place. Cinéma Nova is run by the non-commercial, non-profit organization Nova, managed by a collective of individuals who work on a voluntary basis.

If you want to learn more about the cinema and its history, you can book a guided tour led by Isabel Biver, a historian of Brussels cinemas and author of the book "Cinémas de Bruxelles" (CFC Editions, 2020). To book a tour, please send an email to
