Marcel Ophüls (1927-2025)
French filmmaker and actor Marcel Ophüls passed away at the age of 97. He was the only son of filmmaker Max Ophüls and actress Hilde Wall. His family fled the Nazi regime in 1933, eventually reaching the United States via France and Spain. After serving with the US Army, he worked as an assistant to his father and directors like John Huston. He directed two feature films, Peau de banane (1963) and Faites vos jeux, mesdames (1965), before turning to documentary. With Le chagrin et la pitié (1971), he challenged myths of the French Resistance. Later works include L’empreinte de la justice (1976), Hôtel Terminus (1989), and Veillées d’armes (1994). His final film, Un voyageur (2013), was a filmed memoir.
