Women in Silent Film
Conference and Film Programme at CINEMATEK
From June 11 to 14, CINEMATEK, Université libre de Bruxelles, Women and Film History International (WFHI), and University of Antwerp host the conference Women and the Silent Screen XII: Form and Feeling in Silent Cinema. Over four days, panels will present new research and restorations, highlighting archival (re)discoveries of women’s roles in silent film. Evening screenings, open to the public, include a special focus on Asta Nielsen, with the world premiere of the new restoration Der fremde Vogel (Urban Gad, 1911) and Laster der Menschheit (Rudolf Meinert, 1927). The conference closes with Fires of Youth (Emile Chautard, 1917), newly restored by CINEMATEK.
Before and after the conference, the Women in Silent Film programme continues at CINEMATEK throughout the summer. Running until the end of August, the series features a rich selection of restored films including Vanina (Arthur von Gerlach, 1922), The Red Lantern (Albert Capellani, 1919), Pollyanna (Paul Powell, 1920), and Dorothy Vernon of Haddon Hall (Marshall Neilan, 1924), among others.
