A comédia de Deus

A comédia de Deus
God’s Comedy

João de Deus is the manager of an ice-cream shop owned by an ex-prostitute, Paraíso dos Gelados (Ice-Cream Paradise). Through a unmoved desire of perfection, he seeks, through cleansing and purity to attain heaven. The surrounding world, however, does not comply with his decaying vision of lust and decay as a way of achieving his purpose.

In Memoriam Serge Daney

Opening card of the film

“I think my film represents above all the proof, to those who want to understand and accept it, that poetry can’t be filmed, that it is useless to try.”

João César Monteiro

“This monument to cinephilia suggests an unholy alliance between Straub, Tati, de Sade, and a nondescript porn director, under the direction of a dandy who only cares about two things: pleasure and vice.”

Film Comment

“Monteiro’s dark humor and its constant eruption, especially in the late films, at unexpected and often seemingly inappropriate moments is just one expression of his willful iconoclasm. By treating the polymorphously perverse as if it were a sacred ritual, such as the consensual violation of the ice cream ‘maiden’ in 1995’s God’s Comedy, Monteiro generates a poetic and deeply provocative confusion between the sacred and the profane.”

Haden Guest in an interview with Slant Magazine1
