“The Arch negotiates between binaries on three different levels. On the thematic level, the film constructs a vivid and psychologically nuanced representation of a tug of war between nature (libidinal desires) and nurture (social constructs) that cannot be resolved. On the narrative level, it exists in between a classical Hollywood narrative form and an ambiguous narration typical of the art film mode. On the stylistic level, the film is an amalgam of traditional Chinese aesthetics and Western modernist techniques. Tang operates swiftly between these categories, offering a renewed representation of Chinese traditional past from a contemporary point of view.”
