The film Fugue, A Light’s Travelogue is the result of a search for the complexity of the matter of light. With this work, van Riel seeks to understand light and the importance of its energy.

“Physicists responded with an unsatisfying ‘that’s a philosophical question’, philosophers returned with the same ‘this is a question for physicists’. So I wandered through the history of its science and constructed a film that piles up details of it, in order to sing for its existence in an essay. I believed that if I projected and re-filmed images associated with the history of the science of light, and then re-projected and re-filmed these films again, and repeated this process over and over again by adding a potentially infinite number of new layers, I would eventually arrive at a sensible insight.”

“Fysici beantwoordden mijn vraag ‘wat is eigenlijk licht’ met een ‘dat is een vraag voor filosofen’, filosofen op hun beurt antwoordden me met ‘dit is eerder een vraag voor fysici’. Dus ging ik door de geschiedenis van de wetenschap en construeerde een film gebaseerd op details uit de bevindingen van de voorbije eeuwen. Ik ging ervan uit dat indien ik beelden uit de wetenschapsgeschiedenis zou projecteren en deze projectie herfilmen en herprojecteren en opnieuw filmen, en als ik dit proces meermaals zou herhalen en steeds nieuwe lagen zou toevoegen, ik uiteindelijk zou komen tot een bevredigend inzicht.”
