In early 2023, Belgian filmmaker Sarah Vanagt took walks with twenty young women and men from Molenbeek and Schaerbeek, two neighborhoods in Brussels. Starting point is the Kleine Zavel, a park embellished with sculptures referring to old Brussels crafts. What follows are intimate conversations about the place of work in young people’s lives. About expectations and ambitions, role patterns and models. About personal visions of the future and a society that is changing at lightning speed.

“My father – who is now 80 years old – once told me that on his 18th birthday his father took him on a day trip to Brussels. They themselves lived at the Belgian coast. From Central Station, they walked towards the Petit Sablon, the 19th-century park lined with a series of copper-green sculptures, each depicting one of the various 16th-century Brussels trades and crafts: the tanner, the glazier, the brine fishmonger, the cobbler, and so on. Once they were there, my grandfather is said to have told my father: “Right, now pick your profession”.
This ‘tour’ that my 18-year-old father took gave me the idea of making a film featuring a number of young Brussels residents currently making their own career choices. And, just like my grandfather, I wanted to use the Petit Sablon park as a place for doing some thinking, with the 48 bronze craftsmen looking over the shoulders of the young walkers and – who knows? – even whispering new thoughts and other ways of thinking to them.
I see the installation The Models as a sketch, an invitation to go for a walk around the Petit Sablon with your son, daughter, father, mother or friend and, together, to imagine 48 or more new silhouettes there.”

“Mijn vader – vandaag 80 jaar oud – vertelde me ooit dat zijn vader hem op zijn 18e verjaardag voor een daguitstap meenam naar Brussel. Zelf woonden ze aan de Belgische kust. Vanuit het Centraal Station wandelden ze richting de Kleine Zavel, het 19e-eeuwse parkje dat omzoomd is met een reeks kopergroene sculpturen, die elk één van de verschillende Brusselse ambachten uit de 16e eeuw uitbeelden: de huidenvetter, de glazenier, de pekelvisverkoper, de schoenlapper, … Daar aangekomen zou mijn grootvader aan mijn vader hebben gezegd: ‘Zo, kies nu maar je beroep uit’.
Deze ‘rondgang’ van mijn 18-jarige vader gaf me het idee om een film te maken met een aantal jonge Brusselaars die op dit moment hun beroepskeuze maken. Net zoals mijn grootvader wil ik het parkje van de Kleine Zavel daarbij inzetten als denkplek, waarbij de 48 bronzen ambachtslieden over de schouders van de jonge wandelaars meekijken en hen, wie weet, nieuwe gedachten en denkpaden influisteren.
Ik zie de installatie De Modellen als een schets, een uitnodiging om met je zoon, dochter, vader, moeder of vriend(in) te gaan wandelen rond de Kleine Zavel en daar samen 48 of meer nieuwe silhouetten te verbeelden.”
