The Elegant Beasts of Yuzo Kawashima

From 22 October to 11 November, EYE Filmmuseum in Amsterdam presents The Elegant Beasts of Yuzo Kawashima, a programme of five films by the Japanese director in new 4K restorations. A contemporary of the Japanese New Wave filmmakers, Kawashima (1918–1963) is often seen as the “missing link” between the studio cinema of the 1950s and the more radical cinema that emerged in the following decade. His films combine dark comedy and melancholy, portraying post-war Japanese society through characters caught in a world of cynicism, hypocrisy and social struggle. The programme is organised in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in the Netherlands and the Japan Foundation.
