Magic Lanterns, Cinematograph, and Pioneer Projectors
To mark 130 years of cinema, Palace Cinema is hosting the Origins of Cinema exhibition, which traces the evolution of early projection devices, from the magic lantern to the first Pathé Frères projectors and the Lumière cinematograph. The exhibition presents around sixty devices, accessories, and images from different periods, drawing on the collection and encyclopedic knowledge of Jean-Pierre Verscheure, a historian of cinema techniques and a regular contributor to the Palace.
An accompanying programme will explore different formats and media, from silent to sound films, and across narrative genres ranging from the simplest to the most sophisticated. Highlights include a master class by Julien Contreau on 16 April, featuring a screening of Archipels nitrate (2009), and a screening of Broken View (2023) by Hannes Verhoustraete on 4 June.
