Schlingensief – In das Schweigen hineinschreien

Schlingensief – In das Schweigen hineinschreien

Using unpublished and newly digitalised archive footage and film material, Bettina Böhler assembled a portrait of the life and work of the exceptional artist Christoph Schlingensief, who died in 2010. Schlingensief – A Voice that Shook the Silence traces his development from being a pubescent filmmaker with an artistic bloodlust to his period as a revolutionary stage director in Berlin and Bayreuth, finally advancing to become Germany’s ‘national artist’, purportedly venerated by all and invited to create the German Pavilion for the 2011 Venice Biennale. The film explores Schlingensief’s untiring and ultimately inexhaustible love-hate relationship with Germany, its high culture, and petite-bourgeoisie sentiments – which he attributed to himself more than anyone else.

“This documentary contains only archive material, and the deceased protagonist himself is the narrator. [T]he first directorial work by the award-winning editor Bettina Böhler (Western, 2017) [is a] skilfully assembled film from almost inexhaustible archive sources, including many private recordings from Schlingensief's childhood days and from his works, with a power that relentlessly reveals the exceptional appearance of this theater and film artist.”
