Rugged cowboy Glyn McLyntock struggles to hide his dark past as he guides a wagon train through the treacherous Oregon wilderness. To help the settlers survive the hostile conditions, he must choose his allies wisely and confront the ghosts of his former self. Bend of the River was the second of eight films James Stewart and Anthony Mann made together and marked a turning point in Stewart’s career showcasing the actor’s darker side.

« C'est encore sur le thème de l'itinéraire qu'est fondé le western suivant d’Anthony Mann: Les Affameurs. A cet aspect général de l'œuvre répond un aspect particulier, l'affrontement de deux hommes de même trempe, à la fois ennemis et amis. Un convoi de vivres doit rejoindre un village isolé. Il est protégé par deux anciens hors-la-loi, Glyn McLyntock et Emerson Cole. Engagés dans la même aventure, ils se soutiennent jusqu'au moment où Cole rompt le contrat et abandonne son ami. C'est compter sans l'entêtement de Glyn qui réussit à le rejoindre et à le tuer.
C'est vraisemblablement le film d'Anthony Mann où la nature joue le plus grand rôle aussi bien par le décor que par le comportement des héros qui, eux-mêmes, appartiennent par toutes leurs fibres à cette nature. Il y a un contraste, qui est d'ailleurs au cœur de l'univers mannien, entre la sérénité de cette nature et la crispation des héros engagés dans l'aventure. C'est l'un des films les plus équilibrés d'Anthony Mann, que certains critiques vont jusqu'à considérer comme son chef-d'œuvre. »
