Hanekes Happy End

De wereld in Happy End is niet de wereld die we graag zouden willen zien of waarvan we denken dat hij er moet komen. Happy End is het verhaal van het reëel bestaande neoliberalisme – de wereld van Emmanuel Macron, Angela Merkel, Hillary Clinton en Aylan Kurdi. Het is een verhaal over klassenverhoudingen, meer dan een eenzijdig portret van een ontaarde burgerij. Bovenal stelt hij de vraag: hoe verbeelden wij de componenten van de negentiende-eeuwse novelle – burger, arbeider, dienstmeisje, huisvrouw, kind – in een wereld waarin hun cultureel universum is ingestort?

Terreur en utopie van de vorm

Verslaafd aan waarachtigheid: Robert Bressons Au hasard Balthazar

Men voelt in Balthazar, zoals in alle films van Bresson, een bijna fysieke afkeer van hun auteur tegen elke vorm van leugen en in het bijzonder tegen elke vorm van esthetisch bedrog. Deze onverbiddelijke afkeer lijkt de drijvende kracht achter zijn hele oeuvre te zijn. Het leidt tot een zuiverheid van het narratieve medium die in de filmgeschiedenis ongeëvenaard is.
