Griffith has always been an invisible presence in the films of Huillet and Straub. In 1985, the ghost finally materialised. In a montage of tight causality, Griffith's 1909 film A Corner in Wheat, which MoMA once described as “a Biblical tale of avarice, divine retribution, and the prolonged suffering of the masses”, is put in sequence with excerpts from Moses und Aron, Fortini / Cani, and Dalla nube alla resistenza.
