Quatre nuits d’un rêveur in French Theatres

On 19 February, Quatre nuits d’un rêveur (1971) by Robert Bresson will be re-released in French theatres in a 4K restoration by Carlotta Films. Premiered at Cannes Classics and the Lumière Festival 2024, this rare film in Bresson’s work can finally be rediscovered.

Following Une femme douce (1969), Bresson adapts Dostoevsky’s White Nights, previously filmed by Luchino Visconti in 1957. Set in post-May '68 Paris, the film reflects a disillusioned youth longing for freedom and passion. Pierre Lhomme’s cinematography captures the French capital’s nocturnal beauty, accompanied by a folk and bossa nova-infused soundtrack that enhances the film’s gentle melancholy. True to his austere, elliptical style, Bresson avoids dramatic excess in both mise-en-scène and performances.
