Michel de Certeau
Michel de Certeau (1925-1986) was a French historian, cultural theorist, theologian, and psychoanalyst. One of the most versatile and multifaceted thinkers of the 20th century, his work comprises a vast range of interests. His key works include L’invention du quotidien (1980), in which he developed his concept of everyday life practices, which greatly influenced the development of cultural studies in the Anglo-Saxon world, La fable mystique (1982), whose second part wasn’t published until 2013, finished posthumously by his lifelong collaborator Luce Giard, and La prise de parole et autres écrits politiques (1995). His use of space as a key category in the history and analysis of cultural practices inspired the later “spatial turn” in history and art history.
