Trouble by Gus Van Sant / Boca

Gus Van Sant, American filmmaker known for My Own Private Idaho (1991), Gerry (2002), Elephant (2003) and Paranoid Park (2007), is making a theatre production. DE SINGEL is to co-produce and stage the Belgian premiere of Trouble, the very first stage work from Van Sant. The origins of Trouble go back to the 1990s. At that time, Van Sant wrote a film about the life of Andy Warhol, the inventor of pop art, with River Phoenix in the leading role. But the project was abandoned when Phoenix died. On the invitation of Portugal’s BoCA Biennial, Van Sant is returning to that original idea. Now he is not making a film but a musical theatre performance, inspired by the start of Warhol’s career and his personal meetings with the artist. A cast of young actors and actresses play the roles of Truman Capote, Lou Reed and Edie Sedgwick. In Belgium, Trouble is being performed exclusively at DE SINGEL, from 25 until 28 November.
