On April 10, 2026, the Maysles Documentary Center in Harlem presented the New York City premiere of The Magic City: Birmingham According to Sun Ra (2025), the first feature co-directed by French-born, Brussels-based filmmakers Guillaume Maupin and Pablo Guarise. The film, an inventive portrait of jazz pianist/composer/bandleader/cult-icon Sun Ra, focuses on his first three decades in segregated Birmingham, Alabama. The screening was followed by a discussion with the filmmakers and programmer Andrew Castillo.

The red-hot sun, enormous, rising on the distant horizon. A stillness before everything else. Yeelen – brightness, light – opens not with a character or a crisis but with the world itself. This is the first and most decisive of Souleymane Cissé’s refusals: to begin where narrative cinema usually insists one must. Instead, we are made to wait, to look, to be reminded that the cosmos predates the story, and that the story – any story – simply emerges from it.

Met de kortfilm Dans le noir du temps (2002) componeert Jean-Luc Godard een eschatologisch filmessay, “un film sur la fin de tout”. Verspreid over elf segmenten schikt en herschikt hij filmbeelden volgens nieuwe gedachtebewegingen die samen het einde evoceren van “alles” wat de mensheid heeft voortgebracht. Godard recycleert daarbij beelden uit zijn eigen oeuvre (Made in USA, Le petit soldat, Vivre sa vie), uit de filmgeschiedenis en uit anonieme archieven. Toch is de film meer dan een eenvoudige collage. Door beelden te vertragen, te herfilmen, te vervormen en plastisch te bewerken, laat hij ze oplichten in een poëtische compositie.

After the international premiere of Le journal d’une femme de chambre (2026) at the Cannes Film Festival, Flavia Dima spoke to Radu Jude during a brief break between final rehearsals for his next film about how his films transcend cultural codes and local specificity, his views on adaptation and the usage of ultra-contemporary technologies in cinema, and his growing influence on both Romanian and international cinema. Radu Jude: “Nobody feels under attack because someone takes their violin into the street and is playing, or records themselves singing in the shower and puts it on YouTube. In cinema, by contrast, there is a constant anxiety – perhaps also a fear that cinema is dying. And so any new technology provokes fears, as AI does.”

For the past fifty years, John Smith has been making himself at home in the ambiguous realm of image and language. He worked within and parallel to the London Film-makers’ Co-op in his early years, adding to the collective’s structural approach to cinema an equal concern with the construction of narrativity. In all seriousness, he creates a game in every film, deconstructing the givens of words, sound and images, remaking them with humour, even when laughter seems inappropriate. Sabzian spoke to Smith during Courtisane Festival 2026.

A boy of about twelve years old on a bicycle. He rides as fast as he can. In sheer desperation, he has just violently robbed two people. The whole world is on his heels and is about to catch up with him, no matter how fast he rides. But the camera continues to follow him effortlessly in one smooth movement. It seems to make no particular effort to keep up with this boy on the run, and the boy, for his part, makes no attempt to escape the frame. For the full duration of this uninterrupted shot, lasting almost a minute and a half, boy and camera, body and image, are attuned to one another.

Een jongen van ongeveer twaalf jaar oud op een fiets. Hij rijdt zo snel hij maar kan. Hij heeft zonet, ten einde raad, twee mensen op gewelddadige wijze beroofd. De hele wereld zit hem op de hielen en dreigt hem in te halen, hoe snel hij ook rijdt. Maar de camera blijft hem moeiteloos volgen in één vloeiende beweging. Ze schijnt geen bijzondere inspanning te moeten doen om deze vluchtende jongen bij te houden, en de jongen doet op zijn beurt geen poging om uit het beeld te ontsnappen. Voor de volle duurtijd van dit ononderbroken shot, gedurende bijna anderhalve minuut lang, zijn jongen en camera, lichaam en beeld, op elkaar afgestemd.

Wie steun ontvangt, stelt zich zelden vragen bij wat er zich in zo’n commissie afspeelt. Wie geen steun krijgt, leest de feedback aandachtig, maar blijft vaak met het gevoel zitten dat het dossier niet goed begrepen werd. Commissiewerk verschijnt dan als een black box: je stopt er iets in en er komt een beslissing uit, zonder dat helemaal helder is hoe die precies tot stand kwam.

Spoorloos achtervolgt me, misschien voor de rest van mijn leven. Ik kan niet over deze film schrijven zonder het einde te onthullen, dus weet waar je aan begint als je verder leest.

The five films constitute an epic project in which he trails the myriad peculiarities of life in India; first in a fragmented idiom, like collages, and then binding them into a reconstructed whole. Yet, precisely through its incompleteness, it relinquishes any ambition to represent India’s cultural cosmos in its totality, even as it begins to approximate it through its own formal autonomy.

Of the films I have seen in recent years, none have struck and, indeed, fascinated me quite like Dry Leaf – Koberidze’s third feature film that embraces both ample duration and a very artisanal production and lo-fi camera. This wintery correspondence came about when my wish to interview Koberidze at the Viennale could not be fulfilled. This format, beyond simply accommodating physical distance, felt much more open and free, ultimately better suited to discuss not just a film such as Dry Leaf, but also to explore his perspective as an auteur on cinema.

Despite their differences, Marty Supreme and The Smashing Machine both mark a similar break from their earlier collaborative work. In both solo projects, style and subject matter are artificially pulled apart as two separate poles: in Josh’s case, a critical manoeuvre that fails to find a form; in Benny’s, a form adrift in search of content.

Ondanks de verschillen markeren Marty Supreme en The Smashing Machine een gelijkaardige breuk met hun eerdere gezamenlijke werk. In beide soloprojecten worden stijl en onderwerp als twee losse polen artificieel uit elkaar getrokken: bij Josh een kritisch manoeuvre dat geen vorm weet te vinden, bij Benny een verweesde vorm die naar inhoud zoekt.

In 2026 bevindt het Gentse filmlandschap zich op een kantelpunt: de moeilijk afgewende sluiting van Studio Skoop, de renovatie van Sphinx Cinema, de groeiende druk op kleinere initiatieven en een structureel gebrek aan infrastructuur zetten de duurzaamheid van het filmecosysteem onder spanning, ondanks een rijke historische traditie en recente ontwikkelingen zoals plannen rond de voormalige Cinema Rex. Tegen deze achtergrond ging Sabzian in gesprek met vijf stemmen die Gentse filmorganisaties vertegenwoordigen.

Ze was een icoon van een generatie, een filmster, een sekssymbool, een dierenrechtenactiviste, officieus erfgoed van Frankrijk en een fervente aanhangster van extreemrechtse politici. Kortom: een immer omstreden vrouw en fenomeen, maar voornamelijk een beeld dat op vele netvliezen gebrand staat.

On the occasion of the Belgian release of Hair, Paper, Water, Sabzian sat down with filmmakers Trương Minh Quý and Nicolas Graux. The film unfolds as a sensorial flow of image, sound and language as we follow miss Cao Thị Hậu, an elderly woman from a rural region in Vietnam, one of the few speakers left of the critically endangered Ruc language. In her old age she dreams of returning to the dark cave where she was born. As she teaches Ruc to her grandson, the words “cave”, “fire”, and “house” figure as initial coordinates, tiny lights in the dark revealing a fragmented portrait of an ever transforming and remade world, of memory and legacy. In the absence of a written form of this disappearing language, the film documents its prosody through intimate observations of daily life in connection to nature.

Vergeleken met de films van Charles Dekeukeleire of Marcel Mariën is de cinema van Delvaux inderdaad berekend en geconstrueerd. Toch schemert de oorspronkelijke experimentele geest die de Belgische cinema van weleer kenmerkte regelmatig door het rigide kader heen. Ondanks de stroomlijning door structurele subsidies kon de Belgische cinema met moeite concurreren met andere Europese cinema’s, waardoor films maken in België een hachelijke onderneming bleef. Ook Delvaux moest “bricoleren” om zijn films gemaakt te krijgen. Zo verklaarde hij de esthetische keuze voor het magisch realisme als vertelstijl vanuit een financiële noodzaak. Door het werkelijkheidsprincipe deels buiten spel te zetten, laat het magisch realisme immers spontaniteit en improvisatie, of inconsistentie en contradictie, toe.

In The Secret Agent, the latest film by Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho, the main character leaves the cinema during a screening and steps almost seamlessly into a street party. Marcelo, who lives under the alias Armando, is a dissident professor in the dictatorially ruled Brazil of the 1970s. Fleeing a planned assassination attempt, he chooses the cinema as a hiding place to hunker down and consider his next moves. Mendonça Filho’s choice of the cinema is more than just a striking detail.

In The Secret Agent, de laatste film van de Braziliaan Kleber Mendonça Filho, verlaat het hoofdpersonage tijdens een vertoning de bioscoop en stapt vrijwel naadloos een straatfeest binnen. Marcelo, die onder de schuilnaam Armando leeft, is een dissidente professor in het dictatoriaal bestuurde Brazilië van de jaren zeventig. Op de vlucht voor een geplande huurmoord kiest hij de bioscoop als schuilplaats om zich te verschansen en zijn volgende zetten te overdenken. Mendonça Filho’s keuze voor de bioscoop is meer dan een opvallend detail.

Het is opmerkelijk dat Godard, een filmmaker die zo vaak beschreven wordt als onverzettelijk, zich zo openstelt tot bijleren. Zijn filmografie leest als het traject van iemand die zichzelf in vraag leert stellen en vervolgens anderen uitnodigt (zij het soms op brutale wijze) om hetzelfde te doen. Hij heeft zijn films, zijn denken en zijn leven laten “binnendringen” door de politieke urgenties van zijn tijd.

“Een goed verhaal laat zich in een paar zinnen vertellen,” staat er in de krant. Een goed verhaal heeft, met andere woorden, een kern die zo helder en duidelijk is dat het beknopt kan worden samengevat zonder er afbreuk aan te doen, een paar zinnen volstaan om aan te geven waar het werkelijk om gaat. Ook het verhaal van Hong Sangsoos What Does That Nature Say to You? (2025) laat zich eenvoudig samenvatten: in de loop van één dag rijdt een jongeman een berg op, betreedt een huis, gaat weer naar buiten en rijdt vervolgens de berg weer af. De vraag is of daarmee alles is gezegd.

“A good story can be told in a few sentences,” it says in the newspaper. In other words, a good story has a core that’s so clear and distinct that it can be summarized concisely without detracting from it – a few sentences suffice to indicate what it’s really about. The story of Hong Sangsoo’s What Does That Nature Say to You? (2025) can also be summarized simply: In the course of a single day, a young man drives up a mountain, enters a house, goes back outside, and then drives back down the mountain. The question is whether that says it all.

Coninx’ kostuumachtige visie op de geschiedenis schuwt overdadig sensationalisme. Daarmee onderscheidt de film zich gunstig van het gros van het recente filmverleden. Maar Daens draagt eveneens bij tot een neutralisering van diezelfde geschiedenis, die later dominant wordt in de regionale erfgoedpolitiek. Het Vlaanderen van gisteren kan in Coninx’ film enkel gepresenteerd worden door een Hollywoodiaanse lens, en de film geldt daarmee als apotheose van een Vlaamse filmindustrie die altijd naar de VS heeft opgekeken. Dergelijk betoon betekent paradoxaal genoeg ook het opgeven van elke ambitie tot een autonome Vlaamse cultuur. Enkel een dood verleden kan het object van fascinatie worden; voor elke taxidermie moet er tenslotte een overlijden plaatsvinden.

The Mastermind (2025), Kelly Reichardt’s new film, has been characterized as playing with genre, “a heist flick for an arthouse crowd.” Her films are often associated with genres. Meek’s Cutoff (2010) is said to be an “indie western,” Night Moves (2013) an “anti-thriller,” and Wendy and Lucy (2008) a “road movie.” These are genres that have shaped the North American film landscape and allow viewers to orient themselves within it. Reichardt’s cinema thus moves in a space filled with familiar landmarks.

The Mastermind (2025), de nieuwe film van Kelly Reichardt, wordt gekarakteriseerd als een spel met het genre, zoals een “variatie op de heistmovie voor het arthousepubliek”. Haar films worden vaak in verband gebracht met genres. Meek’s Cutoff (2010) zou een “indie-western” zijn, Night Moves (2013) een “anti-thriller” en Wendy and Lucy (2008) wordt als “roadmovie” bestempeld. Genres die het Noord-Amerikaanse filmlandschap hebben getekend en die de toeschouwer toestaan zich daarin te kunnen oriënteren. Zo beweegt de cinema van Reichardt zich in een ruimte die vol staat met herkenningspunten.

Dit gesprek bouwt voort op eerdere gesprekken die we met Sabzian voerden met studenten en alumni van de Vlaamse filmscholen KASK, RITCS en LUCA, met als doel de ervaring van het filmmaken in Vlaanderen en Brussel, en de bijbehorende subsidiecontext in kaart te brengen. In het verlengde van deze gesprekken spreken we de komende maanden met verschillende filmmakers die zich elk in een andere fase van hun carrière bevinden. Dit is het tweede deel van het gesprek waarin regisseurs aan het woord komen die recent hun eerste langspeelfilm realiseerden, die in 2025 in première ging. De vier deden dat telkens binnen een specifieke productiecontext. Het gesprek focust op de verwachtingen, obstakels en eventuele ontgoochelingen, zowel tijdens het maakproces als achteraf.

Je m’étonne un peu de me trouver sur cette estrade tout seul. J’aurais préféré, étant donné l’esprit dans lequel a été réalisé Zéro de conduite, vous offrir à la manière des girls anonymes, comme préface fugitive à la projection du film, un salut chorégraphique en compagnie de tous mes collaborateurs. Une ronde aurait, je crois, avantageusement remplacé tous mots bafouillés.

In October 2025 at the 63rd edition of the Viennale, Sabzian sat down for a talk with Lucrecia Martel, discussing how Nuestra Tierra echoes political concerns found throughout her body of work, the pitfalls of thinking of cinema in terms of fictions versus documentary, the trappings of both style and of the film industry, and how to integrate a very diverse array of imagery into a cohesive whole. Martel: “[T]he film, beyond the historical questions, is also a reflection on my own work. I’m someone who ended up making cinema. I never even said that I wanted to be a director or anything like that. But, well, it became my work. And it’s a reflection on what this work is, how powerful it can be.”

“I believe” Akerman famously said in 1976, “that form highlights class relations within the image.” In other words, the truly political claim of her film was precisely to defend its autonomy as a work of art. An autonomy that Jeanne tries to defend in her own life. Not as a sphere she enjoys or that we should celebrate but rather as a space defined by its own rules, self-governed. In other words, her resistance to what could make her lose control over her actions also offers Akerman a way to make art out of it. For Jeanne, housework is a space that is still protected from the estrangement of work under capitalism.
