Sergei Loznitsa
Sergei Loznitsa (1964) is a Ukrainian filmmaker renowned for his work in both documentary and fiction cinema. Raised in Kyiv, he studied applied mathematics before turning to film, graduating with honours from VGIK in Moscow in 1997. He made his directorial debut in 1996 with Today We Are Going to Build a House, and has since directed over twenty acclaimed documentaries, including Blockade (2005), Maidan (2014), The Event (2015), The Trial (2018), and State Funeral (2019). Loznitsa’s first fiction feature, My Joy (2010), premiered in competition at Cannes, followed by In the Fog (2012) and A Gentle Creature (2017). His latest film, Two Prosecutors (2025), premiered in Cannes’ main competition and won the François Chalais Prize. In 2013, he founded the independent production company Atoms & Void, based in Germany. In 2024, he was the invited guest for Sabzian’s annual State of Cinema event in Brussels.
