About the Squatter Riots (Krakersrellen): On April 30, 1980, the so-called Coronation Riots (Kroningsoproer) took place in Amsterdam on the occasion of Queen Beatrix’s ascension to the throne, under the slogan “No housing, no coronation.” A large part of the city center turned into a battlefield, and riots broke out in many other cities as well.

“Cinematographer Johan van der Keuken also took his son [Teun] with him to film the events in Kinkerstraat on April 30, 1980, during the royal transition. A large building was occupied there, and the finale spiraled out of control (Amsterdam Kinkerstraat, April 30, 1980). ‘A frightening, cold day. For my father, searching for inspiration in the streets was often slightly more important than the well-being of the family. My parents were a team who, despite all parental responsibilities, made films all over the world. For their generation, children were an addition, not the focus. We were not supposed to burden them too much, which granted us an unprecedented level of freedom. For my generation, I believe the bond with our children holds greater significance. By the way, my mother thinks we are too involved in raising her grandchildren.’”
