During the filming of the film titled Johan van der Keuken (1998), four extensive interviews were recorded by author and filmmaker Thierry Nouel, tracing the various stages of the Dutch filmmaker’s life and work. Van der Keuken analyzes the relationships between art and reality, morality and politics, and shares his vision of the exchanges and conflicts between inner life and the external world. He explains in detail his exploration, which spans from the universal to the intimate, and which progressed not without rejections and moments of doubt. Shortly before his passing, he revisited this document, the recording of one of the interviews, and expressed his wish for it to be presented as it was, in its raw, unedited form.
