15. North-South Trilogy: De nieuwe ijstijd [2]
Johan van der Keuken Retrospective
16mm with English subtitles
The soundtrack by Willem Breuker sets the rhythm for the struggles of Peruvian workers building a form of self-management, as well as the despair of a Dutch family whose children lead monotonous lives as workers in an ice cream factory. The family suffers from hearing impairments and is barely literate. Sharp observations of isolation and exploitation, neo-colonial influences, and the false promises of the “modern” society are interwoven in this final part of the North-South trilogy.
On the occasion of the retrospective, Sabzian published an Issue featuring Van der Keuken’s writings, available in English, Dutch and French. A collection of texts on his work by various authors will be published in the coming weeks.
