16. Vietnam Opera + De Palestijnen
Johan van der Keuken Retrospective
16mm with English subtitles
In both films, the question of how to relate to international politics is explicitly raised. In Vietnam Opera, a group of Vietnamese actors is followed as they use a performance to dedicate their art to the liberation of their country. This stands in stark contrast to the clumsy indifference of the Dutch at a market. For De Palestijnen [The Palestinians], Van der Keuken travels to Palestine to depict the resilience and hope of the Palestinian people within a complex international context.
On the occasion of the retrospective, Sabzian published an Issue featuring Van der Keuken’s writings, available in English, Dutch and French. A collection of texts on his work by various authors will be published in the coming weeks.
