This poetic part of the trilogy was filmed in collaboration with writer Bert Schierbeek in three different cultures. On the Spanish island of Formentera, people live close to nature, but the tourism industry poses a threat. In the United States, a community center offers an alternative to the mass-production and consumer society, while in the Netherlands, a factory has been taken over by its workers. Het witte kasteel [The White Castle] illustrates what Van der Keuken saw as a “conveyor belt running across the entire world”.
On the occasion of the retrospective, Sabzian published an Issue featuring Van der Keuken’s writings, available in English, Dutch and French. A collection of texts on his work by various authors will be published in the coming weeks.
